In Hopkinton, R. I., Sept. 21st, 1876, Joseph Spicer, in the 80th year of his age. Bro. Spicer was born, lived, and died in Hopkinton City. He was among the oldest inhabitants of the town, and had been a prominent citizen as a man of business, and a useful member of the community, having held several offices of trust and responsibility, both civil and military. He was also a Christian, having held a membership with the Second Seventh day Baptist church of Hopkinton for more than half a century.
For a number of years his mental faculties were most seriously impaired, until for the last three years, his mind was entirely prostrated, and his noble form was but the wreck of manhood. He leaves an affectionate and faithful wife, and nine living children, (two having died,) eight sons and one daughter, in whose memory he will long live. His funeral was attended by a large concourse of relatives and citizens, paying the last tribute of respect to another of their most aged citizens. Sermon by Rev. S. S. Griswold. Text, "To die is gain."
