Ardyce,

I sent you an email (privately) but don't know if you got it--anyway..

I borrowed the Brookfield, VT Vital and Family Records films 0027925 and 0027926 from the LDS Family History Library and here is what I found:

SMALLEY Benjamin Smalley & Betsey Drowns Married January 6, 1796, at Brookfield, by Elijah Lyman Benjamin Smalley died August 22, 1837

Smalley, Benjamin CHILDREN: Emily, Nelson, Ezra, Lucy

DEATH RECORDS -- TOWN OF BROOKFIELD FOR 1870 Smalley, Ezra Date of Death: Feb. 10, 1870 Name and Surname of the Deceased: Ezra Smalley Age: 50 yrs., 6 mo., 15 days Place of Death: School Dist. No. 11 Disease or cause of Death: Enlargement of the heart Sex and Condition: male, married Occupation: laborer Place of Birth: Brookfield, VT Names of Parents: Benjamin & Betsey Smalley

Could this be your Nelson's father and mother? This death record for Ezra Smalley was the ONLY record I could find that connects any of Benjamin Smalley's children to a mother, Betsey.

I got a death certificate for my ancestor, Barney/Barna Smalley, that said he was born at Brookfield, VT and his father was Benjamin Smalley. I am wondering if Nelson and Barney/Barna were brothers?

I could not find any Benjamin Smalley listed in the Census records for Stowe, VT, only for Brookfield, VT.

Ancestry.com's Gene Pool Individual Records lists a birth date of 1773 - Norwich, VT for Benjamin Small, and death date of August 22, 1837 - Brookfield, VT, with wife listed as Betsey Drowns, father listed as Joseph Small. I found this by searching for "Betsey Drowns" on Ancestry.com's Gene Pool Individual Records.

Provided this information is accurate, then Joseph Small should lead you back to the Mayflower, I think through marriage "Snow" connection--but you would need to verify this, as I have picked most of this up "second hand" through other researcher's Family Tree GED's that have been submitted to Rootsweb (World Connect) and Ancestry.com, but this is one theory to consider:

This is the possible lineage:

Edward Francis Benjamin Joseph Joseph Benjamin Nelson

From what I've been told and seen, the name Smalley may have been changed to Small (or other variations) then some people may have changed it back to Smalley again or it may even have been misspelled/spelled differently on some records (I have seen this).

Please let me know your thoughts on this.

By this response, I am hoping to get input from others to either verify or disqualify some of this information.

Thank you,

M.K.
