Joseph Pyman was born on 11th June 1862 at 3 Horse and Groom Yard in Newington, in the southern suburbs of London. He was the son of a widow called Mary Ann Pyman, formerly Blakeley, who worked as a laundress. Her first husband had died in 1855, and so was not Joseph’s father. Horse and Groom Yard was a narrow alley behind the Horse and Groom public house which stood at 17 High Street in Newington, which was later renamed as 169 Newington Butts.
Joseph has not been found in the 1871 census, nor has his mother and most of his older siblings. Joseph’s next sighting is on 6th September 1880, aged eighteen, when he married Mary Ann Meakins at St Mary’s Church in Lambeth. Joseph described himself as a general dealer when they married.
Joseph has not been found in the 1881 census. Mary was living at Fox’s Buildings in Southwark with her mother (listed under her maiden name).
Joseph and Mary went on to have a large number of children, but also saw the majority of them die young. Mary reported in the 1911 census that she had had sixteen children, only four of whom were still alive. Birth or baptism records have been found for fourteen children between 1887 and 1903.
The 1891 census finds Joseph and Mary living at 9 St Andrew’s Place in Lambeth. By 1901 they had moved to 37 Tanswell Street.
Joseph died in 1908, aged 45. Mary survived him by about four years, and remarried a few months after his death.

Correspondence with another researcher who has obtained this birth certificate indicates that Joseph was born on 11th June 1862 at 3 Horse and Groom Yard, Newington. His mother’s name is given as Mary Ann Pyman, but no father’s name or occupation is given. This birth record has been linked with the Joseph Pyman who married Mary Ann Meekins on the basis that as an adult Joseph indicated that he was born around the early 1860s and he gave his place of birth as both Tunbridge Wells and London at different times. In the 1861 census a widow called Mary Ann Pyman was living at Horse and Groom Yard in Newington with her children, who had been born in Tunbridge Wells. It would therefore appear that Joseph’s mother had recently moved from Tunbridge Wells to the London area before Joseph’s birth. On Joseph’s marriage certificate he gave his father’s name as Philip Pyman, but this would appear to be a fiction. Mary Ann Pyman’s first husband’s name was James Pyman, but he had died in Tunbridge Wells in 1855.
