Paxton, W. M. (William McClung). The Paxtons: their origin in Scotland, and their migrations through England and Ireland, to the colony of Pennsylvania, whence they moved south and west, and found homes in many states and territories. (Frankfort, Kentucky: Kentucky Historical Society, 1966)

"followed the tide of emigration from York Co., Pa, to Rockbridge Co., Va, thence to Nicholas Co,. Ky, and finally, to South-west Ohio. He was born about 1760, and married in Pennsylvania. The name of his wife is unknown."
↑ There are several census records for Joseph Paxton in the early 1800's, and it is not certain which are for him. However, 3 different 1820 census records (1 for Rockbridge, Virginia, and 2 for Kentucky) all show men aged 26-44. If he was one of them, he was born 1775 or later.
