Joseph Patton was in Cumberland county, Pennsylvania, in 1752, and his will, dated 1822, indicates the year of his death. He came to Fayette county, between the years 1775 and 1778. In 1786 he had a warrant for three hundred acres situated in Washington township on the road leading from Perryopolis to Fayette City. Later to this he added two hundred acres adjoining land. This land was patented to him and called Pattonville. He operated a tannery and still house on the farm, and also carried on farming operations. He married Sarah Weir, and had sons: John, of whom further; Thomas; Robert; James; Joseph and David, among whom he divided his farm by will.
