Joseph Lathwell was born in 1839 at Eggington, a hamlet in the parish of Leighton Buzzard in Bedfordshire, and baptised at the chapel there on 28th April 1839. He was the son of Esther Lathwell, formerly Rowe, and her husband Richard Lathwell, an agricultural labourer. Joseph appears in both the 1841 and 1851 censuses living with his parents and siblings in Eggington. In 1851 he was described as a farm boy.
On 4th November 1858, aged 19, Joseph married Sophia Kempson, who was from the nearby village of Totternhoe. They married in the chapel at Eggington and had their first three children there, although the second child died as a baby. The 1861 census finds Joseph, Sophia and their two surviving children at Sanders Yard in Eggington, with Joseph working as an agricultural labourer.
Some time between 1860 and 1863 the family left Eggington and moved about thirty miles south to The Hyde in the parish of Kingsbury in Middlesex. Another four children were born in that area between 1863 and 1869, although the youngest two both died young.
Sophia died in 1870, aged 32. The census the following year finds Joseph and his four surviving children at The Hyde in Kingsbury, living in the same house as Sophia's brother Enoch and his wife.
In 1872, Joseph married again. His second wife was Harriett Louisa Civil, who was originally from the Isle of Wight. She already had a daughter, also called Harriett, who had been born in Southwark in 1869, to whom Joseph became stepfather. Joseph and Harriet and young Harriett appear in the 1881 census still at The Hyde, with Joseph still working as an agricultural labourer.
By 1891 they had moved a short distance to the neighbouring parish of Hendon, where they lived at 6 Edgware Road. They were still in Hendon in 1901, at 2 Florence Street, where they lived in one room.
By 1907, Joseph and Harriett found themselves in the Hendon Union Workhouse. Joseph sought permission for them to share married quarters, but this was refused by the house committee. The 1911 census finds both Joseph and Harriet living in the Hendon Union Workhouse, listed separately in the men's and women's sections. Joseph died there three years later, on 3rd April 1914, aged 75. Harriett survived him by seven years.
