Terrible Affair.
Mr. Klein Kleinpeter Killed.
Tragedy Grew Out of a Dispute Over a land Line.
Shotgun Did the Work.
A desperate tragedy was enacted in the ninth ward of the parish of East Baton Rouge yesterday morning about 7 o;clock as a result of which Mr. Joseph Kleinpeter is in custody and Mr. Klein Kleinpeter lies dead at his plantation home nine miles from this city. The shooting is said to be the result of hard feelings growing out of a dispute about a land line. It seems that Mr. Klein Kleinpeter felt aggrieved at trespassing that had taken place on his land frequently of late, and indulged in a good many remarks derogatory to the honor and honesty of Mr. Joe Kleinpeter, who was his first cousin. It is said that as days passed, Mr. Klein Kleinpeter felt more and more incensed and angered at his relative Mr. Joe Kleinpeter, and continued to indulge in threats and abused Mr. Joe, who heard of it.
It had gone so far, so says many living in the neighborhood, that a road shooting was generally expected whenever the two principles came face to face.
The expected happened yesterday. Mr. Klein Kleinpeter was riding through the Peetree[?] old field near his plantation when Mr. Joe Kleinpeter came in view riding across the field. As soon as he got near enough he raised a shotgun to his shoulder and fired. The charge took effect in the right side of Mr. Klein Kleinpeter, killing him almost instantly. When his body was found his pistol was found on the ground near his side with one chamber empty. Few witnesses saw the shooting and in consequence particulars further than the above are difficult to arrive at.
Mr. Klein Kleinpeter was a prominent cotton farmer of the parish and a well-to-do and substantial citizen. He leaves a widow and several children.
