Capt. Joseph2 Jewett (Joseph1), born 1 Apr., 1656; married 16 Jan. 1680-1, Ruth, daughter of Thomas Wood (220). On Rowley Records he is styled "Junior," "Carpenter," "Merchant," and in the last of his life, always "Captain." He lived for a short time in Ipswich, on the farm his father bought of John Bradstreet (25-2). … He died 30 Oct., 1694. His estate was divided from time to time, and many entries in the Probate Records show the names of the children and sons-in-law (see Essex Deeds, 4 Ips.:329; 11:153; 30:48). He was a soldier in Capt. Samuel Brocklebank's Co. in King Philip's War, 1676, and one of the few survivors of the Sudbury Massacre, having been stationed at Marlboro at that time (Gage). His widow, Ruth, married (2) John Lunt (123).

Captain Joseph Jewett (Joseph, Edward), was born in Rowley, Mass., Feb. [April, misread old style dating] 1, 1666. On the death of his father which occurred when he was four years old he was placed under the guardianship of his uncle, Maximilian Jewett. He married Jan. 16, 1680, Ruth Wood, daughter of Thomas and Ann (-----) Wood. She was born in Rowley, May 21, 1668. They settled in Ipswich and soon removed to Rowley where he was made freeman July 9, 1684. In the Rowley records he is styled Juinor [Junior], Carpenter, Merchant, and the last of his life. Captain. He was in the expedition against King Philip in 1676 under Captain Brocklebank and was one of the survivors of that disastrous campaign, having probably been stationed at Marlborough with Lieut. Jacobs. (Thomas A. Jewett) He was on the roll of Capt. Brocklebank's Co. when "they in battle with Indians 3 Miles from Sudbury April 81, 1676, in which they lost 50 men." (Gage.) He died at Rowley, Mass., Oct 30, 1694. His widow married (2d) Oct 26, 1698, John Lunt, "our tavern keeper," and died Nov. 29, 1734.
