Joseph5 (Hopkins) (Stephen,4 John,3 Stephen,2 John1), b. at Waterbury 6 June 1730; … he d. 27 March 1801, at New Haven. … He was a deacon in the church; town treasurer 1758-63; justice of the peace 1762-66; representative to the General Assembly 1764, and between that year and 1796 was re-elected forty-four times. … In 1777 he was appointed one of the 'justices of the quorum' which post he held until his decease. When the Probate District of Waterbury was established, in 1779, he was made its first judge, and was continued in office during his life. Judge Hopkins died upon the bench, from heart failure, while in attendance at New Haven as senior assistant judge of the County Court."
