1851 census lists him as grandson of Thomas and Sarah Hewson, Jane seems only possible parent for him, it is certain that Thomas was not the father as he was with his parents in Bradford on Avon in Wilshire in 1841.
In the 1841 census 7 week old Joseph is in the household of John and Mary Smith, Mary has an eight month old son and is probably a wet nurse for Joseph, his mother was living at home with her parents.
