Joseph Gobby's origins are unknown. His first sighting is on 12th November 1767, when he married Ann Poulton at Toddington in Bedfordshire. Between 1768 and 1786 the couple had nine children baptised at Toddington, although three of them died as babies.

Joseph has yet to be traced after the baptism of his youngest son in 1786. He does not appear to have been buried at Toddington, but there are three possible Joseph Gobbys buried in the nearby parish of Woburn in 1796, 1802 and 1808, any (or none) of which may be him.
