- ↑ According to the tax list of 1787 "B" Rockingham County, Virginia, Joseph is listed with 2 males above 16 and under 21. His personal property is listed as 6 horses, 2 cattle, and 5 carriages. There was a tax called a "horse tax" because horses seemed to be the chief personal property. The number of horses credited to a person, in that day, would pretty accurately indicate his farming activities. They might aptly have referred to those early farmers as "three horse farmers" or six horse farmers", depending upon the number possessed.
- ↑ Joseph BIRELY's will was proved 16 May 1872 by wife Sarah, with a bond of $40,000 in 28 Sep 1850. Jacob BYERLY was appointed exec. Witnesses I.G. BROWN, Solomon GARBER, Jonah S. ROLLER.
