Joseph, s. of Francis (1), b. 1641; tailor, surveyor, farmer; one of the foremost in the permanent settlement of the town; was Recorder for the Proprietors, the first Town Clerk, and Clerk of the Writs in 1690; wounded by Indians at Indian Bridge Aug. 18, 1695. and d. Sept. 18 [sic]; his gravestone bears the oldest date of any in the old burying yard. He m. Jan. 13, 1675, Sarah, dau. Elder John Strong of Nhn; she m. (2) Sept. 23, 1698, Capt. Jona. Wells, the boy hero of the Peskeompskut fight; she d. Feb. 10, 1733-4, a. 77.
[Note: unclear why "his gravestone [which] bears the oldest date" is ignored and both a different death date and an inconsistent birth estimate are given. The death date is given on the gravestone as 6 Sep, and 18 Sep is contradicted by other sources (see S3), and his age at death gives a birth about 1650, which is more in line with a marriage in 1675 than a birth in 1641.]
