Joseph Ashby was baptised on 30th October 1814 at Ayot St Lawrence in Hertfordshire, son of Elizabeth Ashby, formerly Hornet, and her husband William Ashby, a labourer. The family did not live in Ayot St Lawrence at the time of Joseph's baptism, but in the neighbouring parish of Kimpton. He appears to have died as a boy of six years old, being buried on 21st November 1820.
