    Joseph was the son of Robert Armstrong and Mary McAfee. He was first married to Mary Lillard on October 16, 1833, in Mercer County, Kentucky. There were no children born to this union. On February 19, 1837, he married Charlotte May in Mercer County, Kentucky. To this union were born eight children.
