Facts and Events
"Johnathan has 1000 pounds saved up and gets the lion's share of the plot on the Boston Road called the Streights. I feel quite sure sometimes that the Boston road came meandering over Carter's Rill, but I suppose it did run down Elm Street part way, at any rate, before the elms were planted, I feel sure it cut across Punchard's swamp over the brook to the South meeting house across the fields and through Chestnut Street somehow. But I have still to search the ancient plans for light. Hugh Gordon owned a homestead on the Boston road, and the Wardwell lands ran about his orchard and came down on both sides to the street, so that he was in a section cut out like the segment of a lapboard. His Hanna married Johnathan who died in 1774 and he went off to Reading with Dr. Eaton. Mary, her sister, married Joseph Lovejoy and this small holding, divided at first through barn and chimney, was sold by the girl to Lemuel Holt who begins to buy all the land to spare around Caramel, The Gordon house may have stood on Plato Eames' site. A very curious paper is that of Johnathan with his small inventory, prepared according to law by Henry Ingalls and Ebenezer Lovejoy with laaac Lovejoy who was in the Continental Army in 1780, says the additional paper, and the first inventory having been burned in the looting of the house of Peter Frye Esq. of Salem. Tory, also Register of deeds, they prepare another "as best they could", Hanna Gordon approving. Peter, the Rev. Vet. succeeds his father, and his Sally who marries Ben Farrington is the only descendant I find who stays. The family of the late George Frye are also from Jonathan Esther. -Some Wardwell Tax-Payers Charlotte Abbott Andover Townsman 07 May 1897 References
