Jonathan at one time owned at least 320 acres in Austin Township, Macon County, IL; namely; the E1/2, NE1/4 of Section 20 (where he lived) and the E1/2, SE1/4 of Section 17 and the SW1/4 of Section 8. The Section 20 property was sold to his son Silas R. Nowlin on June 28, 1898 and the Section 17 property was sold to his son Jont. A. Nowlin on June 28, 1898. Louis Emery (a grandson of Jonathan Blasdel Nowlin) was born in the Section 20 property. As of 2011, the W1/2, SW1/4 of Section 8 was owned by the Nowlin Family Farms, LLC and this 80 tract has been designated as a Century Farm by the Illinois Department of Agriculture in that it has been continuously owned by the same family for at least 100 years. This LLC was formed following the death of then title holder, Oscar JB Nowlin, who was born on this 80 acre tract and who is a grandson of Jonathan B. Nowlin.
When Jonathan retired, he moved to Farmer City, IL. He was a member of the Grand Army of the Republic, and during the later years of his life traveled extensively attending the Grand Army of the Republic National and State Encampments and visiting relatives. Jonathan married his first wife, Jane Elizabeth Sykes on 20 Aug 1862 in Dearborn County, IN; they had nine children. Jonathan's second wife was Louisa J. (Marsh) (James) Nowlin; they were married 05 Sep 1898. While she was his first cousin, they did not have any children. As first cousins, the common grandparents shared by Jonathan and Louisa Nowlin were Jonathan Blasdel and Nancy E. (Cooper) Blasdel. Jonathan is buried in the same plot as both of his wives.
Jonathan Blasdel Nowlin was buried on December 20, 1931 in Wrights Grove Cemetery, west of Maroa, IL, in Lot 14 of Block 2. He served as a Private in H Co. 83rd Ind. Inf. during the Civil War; he enlisted on August 16, 1862 as a corporal and was discharged June 2, 1865 as a private; he was demoted as a result of accidentally injuring a fellow soldier while doing some "horse play". His service included the march through Georgia with General Sherman. His death certificate No. 0200225 was filed with the State of IL on December 19, 1931.
