Jonathan Kaye was the 8th child of Benjamin and Sarah Kaye who spent their lives in the vicinity of Kirkburton, a separte parish, northeast of Holmfirth. At the 1861 census he was living with his widowed mother in Wooldale where he worked as a power loom weaver at a woollen mill. About this time he met up with Betty Battye, who was the 19 year old daughter of Joseph and Lydia Battye, also of Wooldale. According to the 1871 census Jonathan and Betty had a son, Joe, in 1861. Joe was illegitimate and was known as Joe Kaye Battye or Joe Battye.
Jonathan and Betty married in November 1864. A daughter, Ann, was born and baptized in 1868. But here the mystery begins. In 1870 Betty, now a widow, married Henry Worsley and the 1871 census household was made up of Henry, Betty and the two Kaye children. No burial has been found for Jonathan around this period and the only civil registration from Huddersfield is dated 1865. The Jonathan William Kaye death registration in 1869 was for a child aged 9.
