BROWN, Jonathan, s. of Josiah and Susanna, [born] July 26, 1720.

  2. Source:Hoar, Alfred Wyman. Lineage and Family Records of Alfred Wyman Hoar and His Wife Josephine Jackson, p. 32, calls this Jonathan Brown a son of "Nichols Brown", but that appears incorrect, as shown below.

Source:Stearns, Ezra S. Genealogical and Family History of the State of New Hampshire, p. 1560, says "Jonathan Brown was no doubt a descendant of Nicholas Browne, and resided in Westminster", which is better. This Nicholas is the immigrant, the grandfather of the Nicholas who had a son Jonathan. But still, there is no evidence this Jonathan went to Westminster, only his son Jonathan who Stearns discusses next.

Source:Chandler, Charles H. History of New Ipswich, New Hampshire, 1735-1914, p. 265, puts it better, saying he "is assumed to have been descended from Nicholas Brown of Westminster and Reading, but no certain evidence of such descent is known."

The fact is that the marriages of two Jonathan Browns overlap, showing them to be different. One is presumably the son of Nicholas that Hoar is talking about. He is covered in Source:Wyman, Thomas Bellows. Genealogies and Estates of Charlestown, Massachusetts, 1629-1818, p. 129, Jonathan #28.

This Jonathan, #29 in Wyman, is covered much less well. Identification of his parents, his birth and his death are all a matter of speculation. Based on the date of his first marriage in 1740, he is probably be the son of Josiah and Susanna Brown, b. 1720, bolstered by his use of the name Susanna for a daughter. The will of Josiah Brown in 1754 mentions his son Jonathan, making him co-administrator with another son, Nathaniel. But he names no grandchildren.

There are a couple of deeds between Jonathan and Nathaniel Vol. 60, p. 131 in 1751 (with wife Elizabeth), and Vol. 60, p.129 in 1754, but neither specify a relationship between the two.

It appears from other deeds that he, with his wife Anna, sold his lands in Reading in 1773 and 1774 (Vol. 74, p. 196-7, Vol. 77, p. 100), but where he went after that is speculation. Perhaps he joined his son in Westminster, perhaps he went to Marblehead, where apparently, the death of his widow is recorded.
