This according to cousin Don Zimmerman; John and Margaret Zimmerman appear in the 1820 census for Centre Twp., Columbiana Co., OH. In 1831 they bought land in neighboring Stark CO. the patent certificate (available as a download from http:P//www.glorecords.blem.gov/, do a patent search for John Zimmerman in OH.) indicates John was living in Stark CO at the time, and they appear in the 1830 census in Osnaburg Twp., Stark Co., OH where they bought land. They lived on this land until about 1851, when they sold out and bought land in Freedom Twp., Wood Co., OH.

John F. Zimmermanwas born in Virginia either in Shenandoah CO or in Hardy CO which is now part of West Virginia. The family moved to Columbiana CO OH perhaps in 1807 when John F. was 13 years old. He and probably his father were OH Militia members during the War of 1812. His obituary states that he had "seen considerable service against the British and Indians in the then North-Western Territory". These actions may have involved General Hull's disastrous campaign at Detroit or later more successful encounters under Harrison.

In the 1850 Osnaburg Twp., Stark Co., OH Census, the first that listed birthplace, John's birthplace is shown as Virginia and Margaret's as Pennsylvania. This household included Margaret, Susanna, and Elizabeth. Henry F. Zimmerman was living next door, so there is no question that this is our ancestor.

According to Don Zimmerman's research John F. Zimmerman died Jnauary 1, 1872 in DeKalb, Indiana at the home of his second son Michael Zimmerman

John F. Zimmerman's younger brother, William, moved to Wood Co., OH in 1834-5 with his family and in-laws. An older sister Catherine (Brandeberry) has also moved there. A descendant of William's Laurel Zimmerman Beeker had researched their ancestry and claimed they were born in Hardy Co., Virginia to John and Barbara (Cohkenhaur) Zimmerman. I (Don Zimmerman) had contacted a niece of Laurel's who said that William was born in Hardy Co., Virginia according to a newspaper article of April 6, 1883. Don has not seen this source.

I have an old "tin-type" photograph of Sophia Brown and Saul, Sophie appears to be about 40 to 50 years younger than the man, Saul, in the photograph. This could be her father, Soloman Brown.
