Cumberland Order Book, page 26(?), Wm. Salley - pay to John Winfree 25 lbs tobacco for one days court attendance (29 Jan 1750). "Cumberland county Virginia was formed from a part of Goochland county in 1748 with a population of 6,000. We searched the Court Order Books of Cumberland county from 1748 to 1785 through use of the LDS microfilm 73140001 to 4, and extracted the John Winfree/Winfrey entries which we find interesting. John Winfree md. Mary Walton in Cumberland county 17 April 1752. Mary Walton was the widow of Robert Walton and daughter of Robert & Martha Hughes. Mary had at least 4 children when Robert Walton died.

NOVEMBER COURT 1760 Page 284On the motion of John Winfrey who made oath according to law, Certificate is granted him for obtaining letters of Administration of the estate of Mary, his late wife dec'd., giving security whereupon he together with George Chambers, his security entered into and aknowledged their bond with condition according to law.

SEPTEMBER COURT 1771 Page 319Judith, the wife of John Winfree, came into Court and being first privily examined, relinguished her right of dower in the land sold and conveyed by the said John to Thomas Carter by deed recorded in this Court. 5

NOVEMBER 1776 PETITION TO DIVIDE CUMBERLAND COUNTY:John Winfree and Samuel Winfree, along with a group of persons living 35 miles or so from the Cumberland Co, courthouse, signed a petition to get the county divided so they would be nearer the courthouse. They contended that for the slightest grievance they were forced to take their horses from the plow to be away three days journey to the courthouse. Their petition was honored and their part of Cumberland county became Powhatan county in 1777."
