John at age 21, taught at the Elba Village [NY] school, which washeld in a two room stone structure. About 1850 he moved to AlleganCounty, Michigan and engaged in farming and in teaching school. The1860 census for Cooper Township, Kalamazoo co., MI lists John Wicks,29, carpenter/joiner, $2,00 real estate, $2000 personal property, bornNY, and his wife Mary, 21 also born in NY.

John H. Wicks, was one of the successful and prominent early teachersof the county and followed his profession in Cooper Center and atPlainwell.  Later he located on a farm in Watson township, Allegancounty, and continued teaching in connection with general agriculturalpursuits until he was nearly sixty years of age.  He did much tofurther educational progress in the community and to advance thepublic school system to a high standard.  He is now living retired atMartin, this county, and is one of its respected and valued residents.A native of New York, he was educated in a seminary of that state andfollowed teaching prior to his removal to Michigan.

They were living in Watson, Allegan, MI in 1880.
