    "2. John Whittelsey (John1), b. Dec. 11, 1665, in the house beside the ferry at Say Brook Point, Conn.─the first Whittelsey born in America. 'Lieut. John Whittelsey departed this life ye 2d day of July, 1735,' in his 70th year. His grave in the cemetery at Saybrook Point, Conn., is marked by the headstone that is shown under the tree to the left … of the Whittelsey Monument erected in 1845. The inscription reads 'Here Lieth Ye Body of Lieut. John Whittelsey, departed This life July 2, 1735, in Ye 70th year of his age.' His will, dated Dec. 19, 1730, was probated July 24, 1735. Mrs. Whittelsey died on the 6th of January, 1752, in her 80th year."
