  1. Stories Told To Me By My Great-Grandmother, Louetta White Auvil By Mary White Carpenter Excerpt: John White, Jr. drowned in the Cheat River on May 14, 1868. He had taken grain to Auvil's grist mill at Auviltown. He had a large white horse to carry the grain and rode a smaller black horse. While he waited for his turn and the grain to be ground, the river rose suddenly and when John Jr.'s grain was ready, they tried to persuade him to wait until the Cheat River went down. But, determined to make it home, he thought he would be safer on the large white horse.

So he put the grain on the smaller black horse and rode the white horse into the river. The white horse became panic stricken, floundered and lost his footing and horse and rider both drowned. He left a wife and four children.

Two were daughters Malissa and Louetta. Malissa, married to George Baxter Auvil, drowned crossing the Ohio River. George B. cannot be found after this. William, his brother, married Louetta White. William made a trip west to search for George, but that is all I ever heard of the story.
