John was the fourth child and first son of John Welton and Mary Upson. He was probably born in Farmingtion, CT in 1672/73, as he was 8 years of age in November 1681. He was granted 25 acres in Waterbury on Dec 22, 1690, a house lot Jan 20, 1692 (formerly granted to John Richards); 4-5 acres Jan 7, 1705/6, a 40 pound propriety was given him in the undivided lands Jan 5, 1707/8 and he was admitted as a bachelor proprietor in the 100 acre division on April 12, 1715.
