"193 … (Dr.) John (Welles), b. 10 Feb 1709/10 in Wethersfield, Connecticut (Barbour citing VR 1:11); bapt. 12 Feb 1709/10 (Wethersfield Church Records, slip index citing SM:38); d. 19 Feb 1771, at age 60, according to his gravestone in the Village Cemetery, near to his older brother Thomas (Hale 24); m. Mary _____, who d. aft. 17 Aug 1796 when she and her second husband deeded four acres in Hoccanum to Benoni Wells (Wethersfield Deeds 21:344). She m. (2) 3 Jul 1774 in Wethersfield (Conn. Marriages 3:14), Dennis Dugan, b. c. 1725; d. 13 Dec 1813 , at age 88, in Rocky Hill (Barbour citing VR 1:100; Stiles' Wethersfield 2:310 notes that his age is given as 'about 85' in the Stepney Church Records). An administrator's bond on the estate of Dr. John Wells of Wethersfield was entered by Mary Wells on 7 May 1771; Benezer Hale of Wethersfield was surety. Her administrator's account includes expenses for a midwife and a nurse (implying that a child was born posthumously), digging the grave, a coffin and tombstones. The distribution, dated 12 Jan 1787, names only son Benoni Wells [from his name possibly the posthumous child]; eldest daughter Meribah Wells; second daughter Jerusha Wells; and youngest daughter Mary Wells. The dower thirds were set out 5 Mar 1784 to 'Mary Wells alias Duggin, late widow of Doctr John Wells' (Hartford Probate District, Connecticut Estate files, docket no. 5821)."
