John Warren was baptised on 3rd November 1799 at Stoke Damerel in Devon, which was the parish which covered the town of Plymouth Dock. He was the son of Robert and Honor Warren.

John's next sighting is on 23rd December 1821, when he was married at Stoke Damerel to Ann Maria Harry, who was originally from Saltash in Cornwall, on the opposite side of the River Tamar. John worked as a mariner and so was often away at sea.

After their marriage, Ann returned to Saltash for a time, where their first son, John, was baptised in 1822. She then moved back across the Tamar to Devonport (as Plymouth Dock had been renamed in 1824) and neighbouring Stonehouse, where the rest of their children were born. Between 1822 and 1845 Ann and John had at least six children, although two of these are known to have died young.

The 1851 census finds Ann and three of her children living in Devonport. John was away from home on census night, presumably at sea. By 1861 he had retired from the navy and he appears with Ann in the census. They had also left Devonport and were living in the village of Polbathick in Cornwall.

John appears to have died in 1866 in Devonport. Ann outlived him by several years. By 1871 she had moved to Plymouth, where she was living with her daughter Honor, who was working as a governess.

Needs to be confirmed at Devon Record Office. Whilst no named connection has been found, this baptism has been linked to the John Warren who married Ann Maria Harry on the basis that it is in the parish in which he claimed to be born in the 1861 census and at about the right time. Moreover, one of John and Ann's daughters was called Honor, which was the name of this John's mother.

    d. John WARREN, September Quarter 1866, Stoke Damerel Registration District, Volume 5b, page 245, aged 66 [1799/1800]

John seems to have died between the 1861 census and 1871 censuses. There is no John Warren death in that period in the St Germans district in which he had been living in 1861, nor a plausibly aged John Warren dying in the Plymouth district, where his widow was living in 1871. This death in Stoke Damerel district (which corresponded to the Borough of Devonport at that time) is the correct age and the family had spent many years in Devonport.
