Among the early settlers of 1823, was John Vaughn, who located on section 14, English township. He was quite a prominent man in the county, well known for his energy and enterprise. He was married to Hester Crain, a daughter of Silas Crain, Sr. They raised a femily of 13 children, now nearly all deceased. Mrs. Vaughn is now living with members of her family. A son, Erastus, lives near Girard, Macoupin county, and a daughter-in-law lives near Litchfield, Montgomery county. Mr. Vaughn died at the old homestead, and is buried in the Lax Cemetery. he was an active member of the Baptist Church.
