Information from “Virginia/West Virginia Genealogical Data from Revolutionary War Pension and Bounty Land Warrant Records”, Vol. 6, compiled by Patrick G. Wardell, Lt. Col. U.S. Army Ret. :
- Vance, John, entered service as sergeant major in 13th Virginia Regiment; twice wounded at Battle of Germantown/ moved to western part of Pennsylvania or Virginia near Yogohany River abt. 40 miles from Fort Pitt; affidavit in file age 67 in Pendleton Couinty, virginia 1813 when disabled from Revolutionary War wounds; William Marteney filed affidavit there 1814 he had known soldier for 16 years; soldier died 2/8/1826; married 10/1773 Nancy, by magistrate Colonel William Crawford who was soldiers's regimental commander in Revolutinoary War; widow pensioned age 82 in Pendleton County, Virginia in 1838, per County Justice of the Peace Jesse Hinkle who filed affidavit he was age 56 and soldier's widow had 3 children older than he & he had known her for 42-43 years; Thomas Miller filed affidavit there then abt. age 61, he had known soldier & wife for 50+ years & their eldest daughter was Polly, per County Court Clerk Zebulon Dyer; Adam Mouse filed affidavit abt. age 70 there in 1839, he had known soldier & wife for 50 years, their eodest son Robert; Adam Harper filed affidavit ther then age 54, me married soldier & wife's eldest daughter Mary/Polly who was bon 1779 & died 4/22/1829; soldier's widow resided there in 1843 per County Justice of the Peace John Boggs; died 9/4/1844 Virginnia, & administration of her estate granted pension arrears due her. Note: 2 2From Bonnie Vance Miller's research --> Revolutionary WarPension Records of John and Nancy Vance. (W-6338). Thedeposition of Adam Harper, aged sixty-five years, testifies thathe married the daughter of John and Mary Vance, and that hiswife has been dead 10 years on the 22nd day of April last, thathe has just been and examined the tombstone at the head of hergrave and upon the examination he here found engraved upon thesaid stone the following words and figures to wit: Mary Harper,deceased, this life, April 22, 1829, age 50 years, 6 months. Hefurther testifies the engraving upon his wife's tombstone wasplaced there on the day of her burial, and Mary Harper, his latewife was the eldest daughter of John and Nancy Vance, his wife.Given under his hand this 8th day of May 1839. Bonnie wondersif the engraving was done on fieldstone that has since beendestroyed, since she was unable to locate the grave.
