John Townsend's origins have yet to be established. If the age recorded on his burial record is correct then he was born around 1780. His first confirmed sighting is on 21st June 1804, when he married Catherine Linney at Leighton Buzzard in Bedfordshire. She died just three years later, aged 27.

In 1810 John married again, with his second wife being Mary Chandler, with whom he had four children between 1811 and 1819. Mary died in 1819, aged 37.

John died in 1823. He was said to be 42 years old.
