SWARTON, John, No. Yarmouth, where 50 a. were ord. laid out to him 29 June 1687 in answer to his pet. to Andros, dated Beverly 16 June 1687, stating that he had visited No. Y. and found favor with Capt. Gendall. In July 1688 he depos. ab. John Royal. He had served in Flanders under Charles Il and Capt. Church in his exped. East 1689 saw 'one Swarton a Jerseyman.' He was k., w. and ch. taken captives at No. Y. 1689. The mo. of his rec. ch. was Hannah, his captive w. was Johanna (called Anne Ebal by Catholic rec. when her dau. was mar.) and it seems certain that he m. in Bev. 8 Jan. 1671 Joanna Hibbert or Hibbard, b. 1651 (not Abigail, as by mar. rec.), and that her sis. Abigail, b. 1655, m. Thomas Blashfield(1). She was redeemed in 1695, her famous 'Narrative' being first pub. in 1697. See 'N. E. Captives,' i: 204-206. Mary, dau. of John, d. at Bev. 14 Sept. 1674. Ch. of John and Hannah bp. there: Samuel, bp. 8 Nov. 1674, was k. bef. the captives reached Norridgewock on their way to Canada. Mary, bp. 17 Oct. 1675, m. in Canada 9 Sept. 1697 John Lahay or Jean Laha, an Irishman. 11 ch. there. John, bp. 22 July 1677. His mo. parted with him the day after their capture, his later hist. unkn. One John m Abigail ---kins in Bev. 4 July 1702, and appar. soon d. Jasper, bp. at Bev. 14 June 1685, redeemed with his mo. in 1695, when she was called 'of York,' he 'of Casco.'
