Came to what is now known as Indiana County in 1785 with his family of 7 children. They were among the earliest settlers, the Indian being their nearest neighbor. He and his wife both died on the farm which they first settled, located on what was then known as McHenry Run, and joined the McKee farm, after which this run was named in later years, and it is now known as McKee Run.

During the Revolutionary War, 9/28/1776, Pennsylvania's constitution went into force, mandating that all males over the age of 18 must take an "Oath of Fidelity" to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. John "Stachal" took the oath of allegiance on October 14, 1777, before Hugh Martin, a Justice of the Peace of Westmoreland County PA. John Stuchell served in the Westmoreland County Rangers as a private in the Troop Light Horse Company. Between 1778-1783 he served on the frontier and qualified for depreciation pay.
