  • Steele, John, lieutenant of Virginia Line; BLW2077 issued 8/24/1789; records lost in Washington DC fire 1800; query letter in file says a John Steele born 1737 probably Orange County, Virginia, served as captain in Virginia or North Carolina company in Revolutionary War, moved abt. 1784 to vicinity of Lnoxville, Tennessee, thence Nashville, Tennessee, then to Sumner County, Tennessee, then 1807 with family to Randolph County, Illinois, 7 died 1820 at present site of Steeleville, Illinois & had wife Mary; query letter in file says soldier entered service 1777 as ensign in 9th Virginia Regiment, was taken POW at Siege of Charleston, was appointed lieutenant of 3rd Virginia Regiment 1793, & was a pioneer settler of Sumner County, Tennessee.
