Hij is een zoon van Louis John Stalman en Cornelia Kruizenga. Immigrated to the United States on 22 october 1922. When he came to America, he lived and worked for his uncle John Stalman on 97th and California Ave in Evergreenpark. After he married, John worked for Dick Sluis for a number of years making rockgardens and doing landscaping.

Later he did truck farm gardening, raising green onions, he was known as the "Onion-king" of Evergreenpark.

John learned to play a number of musical instruments, including the horn and harmonica.
