Snow, John - born 3/4/1758; entered service 1776 in Virginia in 2nd Virginia Regiment; granted Pension in Orange County, Virginia, 1810; Francis Cowherd made affidavit there then that he was an officer in 2nd Virginia Regiment & knew soldier during Revolutionary War per County Clerk of Court Reynolds Chapman; soldier resided there in 1821, totally blind*, occupation farmer, with wife Mary abt. age 68, daughter Mary abt. age 31, daughter Jane abt. age 26, daughter Lucinda abt. age 23, daughter Raney abt. age 19, & son Early abt. age 21, died 2/29/1840. F-S39391, R2242.

  • In the Revolutionary Pension Statement it shows that it was John Snow's wife Mary that was "totally blind", not John Snow himself.

    State of Virginia, to wit
    At a Quarterly Court held for the County of Orange at the Courthouse on Monday the
    25th of May 1818 John Snow, aged about fifty-nine years and a resident of this County, appeared in Court this 25th of May 1818 and being first duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the pension allowed by the late act of Congress entitled "An act to provide for certain persons engaged in the land and naval service of the United States, in the revolutionary War."
    That the said John Snow enlisted in the month of March or April in the year 1776 in the
    second Virginia Continental Regiment in the State of Virginia in the Company commanded by
    Frances Taylor of the said State; that he continued to serve in the said Regiment for two years: that he was honorably discharged at Valley Forge, in the State of Pennsylvania; that he has lost his discharge; that he was in the battles of Brandywine [September 11, 1777] and Germantown [October 4, 1777]; and that he is in reduced circumstances and stands in need of the assistance of his country for support.
    And Francis Cowherd1 of this County, who was a commissioned Officer in the second
    Regiment aforesaid being also sworn declares that the above named John Snow enlisted himself
    as a soldier in Captain Francis Taylor's Company in the second Virginia Regiment in the service of the United States in the War of the revolution, sometime in the spring of the year 1776 for the term of two years; which term he served faithfully.
    Whereupon it is ordered to be certified, that it appears to the satisfaction of the Court, that the said John Snow did serve in the revolutionary War as stated in the preceding declaration against the common enemy, and that a copy of the said declaration and proof, the transmitted to the Secretary of the Department of War, pursuant to the directions of the above mentioned Act of Congress.
    In testimony that the foregoing declaration [text partially up skewered by the official seal] proof and order are truly copied from the records I Reynolds Chapman Clerk of the Court aforesaid have hereunto set my hand and affixed the seal of the said Court this 13th day of November in the year of our Lord 1818, and of the [document ends here]

    On this 26 day of February 1821 personally appeared in open court being a court of record for the said County John Snow aged sixty-two years a resident of said County who being
    first duly sworn according to law doth on his oath declare that he served in the revolutionary war as follows: That he enlisted in the month of March or April of the year 1776 and the second Virginia Continental Regiment in the state of Virginia in the company commanded by Frances Taylor of the said state, that he continued to serve in the said Regiment for two years: that he was honorably discharged at Valley Forge in the State of Pennsylvania: that he has lost his discharge: that he was in the battles of Brandywine and Germantown as set forth in his declaration made before this court on the 25th of May 1818. That he received a pension certificate which is numbered ___. And I do solemnly swear that I was a resident Citizen of the United States on the 18th day of March 1818 and that I have not since that time by gift, sale or in any manner whatever disposed of my property or any part thereof with intent thereby so to diminish it as to bring myself within the provision of an act of Congress entitled “an act to provide for certain persons engaged in the land and naval service of the United States in the revolutionary war” passed on the 18th day of March 1818, and that I have not nor has any person in trust for me any property, or securities, contracts or debts due to me nor have I any income other than what is contained in the schedule hereto annexed and by me subscribed

    One sorrel mare four years old, cow and yearling, one sow and five pigs, all which I owe for 684 acres of mountain land, 54 acres land by grant, 6 chairs, one chest, table, 3 pewter basons, for pewter plates, three earthen plates, one ditto dish, five knives and five forks, twelve barrels of corn, shot gun, looking glass, two pots, one oven, frying pan, one meal bag, three weeding hoes, two shovel plows, two grubbing hoes, one fire shovel.

    I am by occupation a farmer and am as able to pursue it as persons generally are of my
    age. My family consists of my wife, named Mary aged about 68 years who is entirely helpless
    and blind and has been so for upwards of two years, four daughters namely Mary about 31 years old, Jane about 26 years old, Lucinda about 23 years old and Raney about 19 years old and a son named Early about 21 years old who are all healthy.
    Sworn to and declared on the 26th of February 1821 before the County Court of Orange
    being a court of record.

    private for 2 years in the Virginia Continental line.]
