    "From Hartford, Conn., probate records.

    Will: In the name of God Amen. I, John Skinner of Hartford in the County of Hartford and Colony of Connecticut in New England calling to mind my own mortality, and being Sensible that the time of my departure maybe near at hand, but being at the Same time through the goodness of God of Sound disposing mind and memory do make and ordain this my last will and testament in the manner following, that is to say first and principally I commit my soul unto the hands of God depending only and entirely on the merits of the Lord Jesus Christ for Eternal life, and my body the the dust to be buried in a decent manner according to the discretion of my Executors hereafter to be named in hope's of a glorious resurrection at the last day and with regard to those worldly goods God in his providence hath given me, after my just debts and funeral charges are first paid, I do hereby dispose of them in the following manner, that is to say, to my beloved wife Mary Skinner in lieu of Dower I give one third part of my moveable estate, and the use and Improvement of one third part of my real estate during her natural life.

    To my eldest son John Skinner Junr. over and above what I have already given him by deed of gift, I give unto him and to his heirs my lot in Baker's lane commonly called Shirley, lot containing about 8 acres, also one third part of my lotts of land which I bought of Col. Joseph Pitkin late of Hartford dec'd and his son Joseph Pitkin Junr lying on the first hill in Hartford Commons, so called, the whole of which lots contain about 40 acres Allso the whole of my lots of land in the South meadow which I bought of Ebenezer Webster and Jacob Webster containing about 10 acres, except 2½ acres of lot lying on the South part which I give to my son Richard. Allso I give to my son John my lot of land in the South meadow which I bought of Hezekiah Hopkins containing about 4½ acres near Hopkin's elm so called.

    To my Son Richard skinner and to his heirs I give my house and home lot in Hartford where he now lives which I bought of William Hooker, allso the one third part of my above mentioned lots of land which I bought of Col. Joseph Pitkin and his son Joseph Pitkin Junr lying in Hartford Common So called, one third of which I have given to my son John allso I give to my sd son Richard my lot of land lying opposite to the dwelling house of Messrs Moses and Elisha Hopkins allso Hurlburts lot containing about 3 acres which lot was given to me by my hon'd father Mr. John Skinner late of Hartford dec'd allso I give to my son Richard my lot of land lying about 20 rods further westward on the Same highway which I bought of Zebulon Muggot containing about 4½ acres allso to my son Richard I give my lot of land in the South meadow, which I bought of Mr. Samuel Catlin and Sarah his wife containing about 6 acres allso ½ of my lot of land lying in the east part of the West Division So called which I bought of Thomas Sheppard dec'd as ½ containing about 10 acres likewise to my sd son Richard I give 2½ acres of land in the South part of my lot of land in the South meadow which I bought of Ebenezer and Jacob Webster the other part of which I gave to my son John.

    To my Son Nathaniel Skinner I give the whole of my house and homestead where I now live containing about 6 acres allso my lot of pasture land containing about 10 acres lying near the house of Mr. George Butler, which lot was given me by my sd hon'd father Mr. Jno. Skinner dec'd allso my lot of land lying on Baker's lane on the East side of Rocky hill so called wch was given me by sd hon'd father containing about 5 acres allso my lot of land wch was laid out to me in Hartford Commons so called lying near the place where Pratts Sawmill formerly stood containing about 12 acres allso to my sd son Nathaniel I give one third of my lots in sd Hartford commons wch I bought of Col. Joseph Pitkins and Joseph his son the one third of which I have given to my son John and the other one third part to my son Richard, allso I give to my sd son Nathaniel the remaining ½ of my lot in the east part of the West division which I bought of Thomas Sheppard the other ½ of which I have given to my son Richard allso to my son Nathaniel I give my lot of land in the South meadow lying in the Indian fields so called wch I purchased of Thomas Hopkins by an exchange of other lands containing about 3½ acres allso another small lot lying a little further north in sd Indian fields in sd South meadow containing about 1½ acres which I bought of Isaac Hopkins and whereas I have already given to my four daughters Mary, Deliverance, Rachel and Elizabeth about 80 acres a piece, I give unto each of them £10 more in lawful money to be paid to them by my Executors out of my moveable estate within one year after my decease and further my will is that in case my moveable estate after my just debts and funeral charges are first paid any my wife's thirds to be set out to her be not sufficient to pay to my 4 daughters, Mary, Deliverance, Rachel and Elizabeth their above mentioned legacies, that their respective Legacies be paid to them out of my real estate by my 3 sons in equal proportions but in Case my moveable estate by more than sufficient to pay my debts and the aboe mentioned Legacies Such overplus if any there be, I give unto my beloved wife Mary Skinner to be at her disposal, and I do hereby appoint my beloved wife Mary Skinner and son John Skinner Junr Joint Executors of this last will and testament and I do hereby declare this to by my last will and testament utterly invoking and making void all former wills and testaments at any time heretofore made by me. Signed sealed published and declared by the said John Skinner to be his last will and testament and dated in Hartford this 6th day of Sept. A. D. 1769.
