According to the "History of Benton, Washington, Carroll, Madison, Crawford, Franklin, and Sebastian Counties, Arkansas (The Goodspeed Publishing Co., 1889) John M. Simpson was a native of Rutherford County, Tennessee and was reared in Coffee County, Tennessee receiving a 'common-school' education. In 1846 he went to Izard County, Arkansas and he returned to Tennessee two years later, where he remained until 1869. In 1870 he located on his farm in Franklin County, Arkansas, "which he has well stocked". "He is a blacksmith by trade, to which he devotes considerable attention". According to the Sallie DeWitt 1981 Genealogy, his family called him 'Mikel'.
