John S. Shrader: Newspaper Obituary and Death Notice Eastside Journal (Bellevue, WA) - Saturday, September 23, 2000 Deceased Name: John S. Shrader of Redmond, formerly of Bellevue, died of cancer Sept. 17, 2000, in Issaquah. He was 78.
Born April 17, 1922, he was a 1939 graduate of Yakima High School and earned a master's degree from the University of Washington in 1951 and a doctorate in education from the UW in 1957.
He served as a first lieutenant in the Army Medical Corps from 1942 to 1946. Mr. Shrader was a science teacher in the Seattle School District at Garfield and Roosevelt high schools from 1948 to 1957. Then he became professor of biology and science education at Central Washington University from 1957 to 1963. From 1963 to 1964, he was an interim professor at the University of Florida and then came back to CWU. He retired in 1988.
He married Ruth Shrader in February 1988 in Seattle.
Mr. Shrader was a past district director of the National Science Teachers Association and president of the Washington Science Teacher Association and Northwest Science Association. He also was a member of the Civil Air Patrol. Mr. Shrader was affiliated with Phi Delta Kappa fraternity, a member of Lamda Chi Alpha honorary, and was a Presbyterian church member in Yakima and Bellevue and a Methodist church member in Ellensburg.
Mr. Shrader enjoyed duplicate bridge, golf, camping, reading, flying, family and world travel.
He published one textbook and numerous articles. His family said he believed his advising and teaching had been the best way he could contribute.
In addition to his wife, survivors include daughters Karen Cassell of Seattle and Kristine Morimoto of Redmond; stepsons Mark Cassell of Snohomish, Scott Cassell of California and Brian Cassell of Renton; and two grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Redmond Presbyterian Church.
Remembrances may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Mr. Shrader was born April 17, 1922, in Yakima and graduated from Yakima High School in 1939. He attended Yakima Valley College, Central Washington State College and the University of California-Berkeley. He served in the Army reserve during World War II.
He worked as a science teacher in Seattle and a professor of biology and science education at Central Washington University. He also was an interim professor at the University of Florida.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth of Redmond; two grandchildren, one niece and one nephew.
