    John Runyan, Jr
    Birth: 1772
    Virginia, USA
    Death: unknown
    Virginia, USA

John was born in Augusta County, Virginia, now Pendleton Co. WV. On 24 July 1794, his little sister, Ruie, was kidnapped and murdered by Indians. A family tradition has it that John Runyan, Jr. vowed that he would kill any Indian he saw after the murderous tragedy, but the Indians heard of this, so they in a trick scheme stole the cow bell off the cow of Runyans herd and took the bell in the woods ringing it as if on the cow. They awaited for Mr. Runyan to come after the cow at eve tide. Mr. Runyan went in the direction of the sounding bell where they attacked him with the tomahawks, in which he with his gun, put up a big fight with them in a struggle. They killed him and scalped him and left laying his body which was found afterwords. His gun showed marks of tomahawks that marred the stock of the gum. Whether or not the cow bell tradition is true or not, he was killed by Indians on a date following the death of his sister on 24 July 1794.
