- ↑ Johnny William Richards, 77, of Morganton, died Dec 8, 2003. Richards had a heart attach on Nov 28 and had been hospitalized during this perios. The was born to Hayden Earl Richards and Cordia Marie Voyles Richards on Sep. 23, 1926. He grew up in the Loving community and began his career in the Army on Dec 6, 1944. Richard fought in the Pacific during WW II. After WWII he joined the reserves and later fought in the Korean War. Richards moved his family back to Morganton in 1960 aftr a few years of living in Cleveland, Ohio, where he and his wife owned and operated two restaurants. Once back in Georgia, he opened another restaurant in Lakewood which they operated until 1982. During Richards; lifetime, he worked in law enforcement. He served as policeman in Blue Ridge and McCaysville. He was also a deputy sheriff with Fannin County. He served as a vice commander and Chaplin in Chapter 28 of the DAV and was active in the North Georgia Honor Guard. He was also Worshipful Master in the Ocoee Lodge of the Masonic Order. He was a member of Toccoa Baptist Church. Richards was always doing something. He was in EMT for Fannin Countym, sold used cars and ran a farm. He never met a stranger, was friendly and well liked by all who knew him and he was always willing to help anyone in need.
Survivors include his wife, Pearl "Pete" Louise McClure Richards; daughters and sons-in-law Shirley and Jim Collins of Morganton, Barbara and Donny Gordon of Lilburn, GA; sister and brother in law, Doris Jean and Clyde Abercrombie of Lawrenceville, GA; grandchildren, Michael Collins and Kelly Collins of Atlanta and Heather and Clay Kersting of Winder, GA. Great-grandchildren, Hope and Chase Kersting. Funeral services were held Dec 10 at 2pm from the Henry Cochran Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev Grady Ray and Rev Loys Waters officating. Music was provided by Valorie Taylor. Pallbearers included Jimmie Abercrombie, Nicholas Jackson, Eugene McClure, Jimmy McClure, Clay Kersting and Dale Moore. Honoray pallbearers included Earl Dehart, Roddy Turner, Oscar Henry, A.J. Clayton, Jim Collins, Jeff Smythe, Clinton Shields, Eston Collins, Don Turner and Donny Gordy. Interment followed in the Toccoa Baptist Church cemetery with military honors by the North Georgia Honor Guard. Henry Cochran Funeral Home of Blue Ridge was in charge of the arrangements.
