  • expanded land holdings significantly by buying rice plantations

  • mentioned as being the director of the US banks of Philadelphia and Charleston

  • moved formal residence to New Jersey and transferred much of his southern property to sons James and Thomas to maintain family business interests there

    JOHN POTTER was son of JAMES POTTER, of Mount Potter, and CATHERINE, daughter of Sir JOHN STEWART, of Ballymoran, County Down, Ireland.

    BORN April 12, 1765, at the residence of his grandfather, Sir John Stewart, Ballymoran.

    IMMIGRATED to Charleston, South Carolina, United States of America, December 15, 1784.

    MARRIED (probably in Charleston, S. C), CATHERINE FULLER, of Beaufort, S. C, (born 1770) on August 22, 1791.

    REMOVED to Princeton, New Jersey, in 1824.

    DIED at Princeton, N. J., October 24, 1849, and was buried in Trinity Churchyard, Princeton, by the side of his wife, who died November 26, 1848.
