Disputed Lineages

Recent scholarship has questioned John's existence. The only surviving evidence for him appears to be late. Margaret Howell, for example, in her article on Eleanor of Provence in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, states that "[i]t is likely that Eleanor bore only five children." (The five were Edward I, Margaret, Beatrice, Edmund, and Katharine.)
