John came to the United States as an eleven year old boy, bound to a sailor. On the second trip to the US he jumped ship and hid out until the ship left without him. He was in the Revulationary War twice.

In 1834, in connection with claims of wide spread frauds in western Virginia, an investigation was carried on of all the pension records from that region. John Mitchell's claim and record were found to be correct and his pension continued. W. G. Singleton who was in charge of this investigation, wrote on the record of John Mitchell; "This is a man of character and intelligence. I am satisfied he is fully entitled to all he draws".
The tract of land on Jesse's Run became the Rev. John Mitchell's home farm, and in the private graveyard on part of it he is buried.
