    "174 John (Merriam), … born at Walpole, N. H., Feb. 28, 1757; … He was a farmer and blacksmith. Removed to Barton, Vt. Tradition has it that he was a soldier in the Revolution, having seven bullet-holes in his clothes without injury to himself on one occasion. He died Oct. 10, 1839."
