John Meakins (or Meekins) was born on 5th March 1865 in Southwark, in the southern suburbs of London. He was the son of Ann Meakins, formerly Walter, a hawker, and her husband John Meakins, a costermonger.

Sadly, young John died early in 1866 when he was less than one year old.
