McGILL, JOHN C. San Marcos ~ John C. McGill, 91, passed away Wednesday, June 18, 2008. Following World War II, with his business partner and childhood friend, Jack McKinney, John opened his first grocery store. They eventually established a chain of three groceries, The Mayflower Markets and The Mayflower Shopping Center, all in San Gabriel Valley. After serving in the Merchant Marines, John served four years in the U.S. Navy as a blimp pilot. John left the Navy in 1946 as a Lt. Commander. Known for his smiling eyes and hearty laugh, John was a man of great kindness and honor. Giving his life to Jesus Christ at the age of 33, John always considered that to be the most important decision of his life. He loved to share his faith in God with others and spent decades of his life in dedicated service to such organizations as Christian Business Men's Committee, Youth for Christ and Child Evangelism. John's other favorite pastimes included fishing and golf. John married Lucille in 1983 in Hawaii. Residing in Indian Wells, Calif., until 1997, when they moved to Lake San Marcos, they shared 25 wonderful years together. John is survived by his beloved wife, Lucille; his brother, George McGill of Pomona, Calif.; and four children, Susan Bennett of Woodinville, Wash.; Linda McGill Dantes of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Paul McGill of Morro Bay, Calif., and Stephen McGill of State College, Pa. John is also survived by 15 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. A Memorial Service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 27th, at The Pavilion at Lake San Marcos - See more at: http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/utsandiego/obituary.aspx?n=john-c-mcgill&pid=113275835#sthash.0ZrI1cSQ.dpuf
