Based on birth place of his siblings, it appears his parents moved the McAuley family from New York to Pennsylvania when he 3 yrs old.

On 5 June 1861 he enlisted in Co. F Ohio 4th Regiment, and mustered out on 21 Jun 1864.

In 1870 John, Abby and family lived with Abby's parents in Canton, Mahoning County, Ohio. In 1880 they lived in Austintown, Mahoning County, Ohio, and in 1910 they lived in Manhattan, New York. In 1870, 1880 he was a painter and in 1910 an artist.

"McAuley, John K. Artist and carriage painter, active in Canton (Stark) from 1888 or earlier to about 1895. He was the father of Charles Raymond Mcauley."

Obituaries

TO BURY VETERAN BESIDE COMRADES -- Son Ships Body of John K. McAuley, Former Canonian, Here From New York.
  That he may be buried beside his comrades, Company F., Fourth O. V. I. with  whom he fought in the Civil war, the body of John K. McAuley, former Cantonioan who died in New York Friday, will be brought here Tuesday, according to a telegram received Sunday by Dr. George Cock, 351 Columbus avenue, a member of Company F.  The message was from C.R.McAuely, a son, who is well-known as a cartoonist for the New York World.  The body will be placed in vault here until Mrs. McAuley's arrival.
   Mr. McAuley was a painter in the employ of the street railway while in Canton.  When he went to New York he changed his work and became known as an artist.
   He was one of the first in Canton to answer President Lincoln's call for volunteers.  He served for three years in Company F. and later enlisted in a regiment of cavalry, serving until the close of the war.

MILITARY BURIAL FOR J.K. McAULEY -- Body of Former Cantoniah,to Arrive Here Today from New York City.

   A military burial on Deporation (sic) day probably will be arranged for John K. McAuley, of New York, former Cantonioan and member of Company F, Fourth O.V,I. who died Friday night at his home,56 Morningside avenue, from bronchial pneumonia.
   The body will arrive here Tuesday afternoon from New York, and will be viewed by friends at the Seesholts undertaking establishment this evening and Wednesday morning.
  The body will be placed in the receiving vault at Westlawn cemetery.  Charles R. McAuley, the son, who was formerly connected with the Repository and is now cartoonist for the New York World and president of the New York Press club, will be here for the services.

TO HOLD FUNERAL OF FORMER CANTONIOAN --

   The funeral for the late John K. McAuley, formerly of Canton, who died in New York city, March 8, and whose body was brought to Canton and placed in a vault in Westlawn cemetery, will be held Monday afternoon at 4 o'clock.  Services will be held at the grave by the Christian Science church.
    Mrs. McAuley, wife of the deceased, arrived from New York for the funeral, and is staying at the home of Dr. George B. Cock, 21 Columbus avenue.  All members of the Fourth Ohio, in which Mr. McAuley served in the Civil war, have been invited to attend the services.
