    Continental Congressman, Governor. His early education was at Middle Temple in London, England earning a law degree. He served in the Cherokee War as well as the Revolution as a Captain in the South Carolina militia. He served in the First Provincial Congress, the Second Provincial Congress, and was Speaker of the South Carolina House of Representatives from 1777 to 1779. He was elected as a delegate to the Continental Congress in 1778 and he endorsed the Articles of Confederation for South Carolina. He served in Congress until his election as Governor of South Carolina in 1782. After his term as governor ended in 1783 he was elected to the Court of Chancery and then was elected to the state House of Representatives in 1784. In 1791 he was elected judge of the Court of Equity and continued that office until his death.
