According to records of St. Boniface Parish, John Mathias was the son of Lewis Mathias and his second wife Josephine Goshe. He was baptized on March 12, 1854. His sponsors were John Gosche and Maria Barbara Peter (wife of Lewis' brother John Nicolaus Mathias).

John md. Margaret Luicius Apr. 20, 1875 at Frenchtown, Seneca Co. They had several children, first ones baptized in Frenchtown, some in Alabama. Sometime after moving to Alabama they were divorced.

Margaret was born July 21, 1851 in Saas, parish of Hachy, Luxembourg, Belgium. Daughter of Louis Lucius and Catherina Warling. She died July 26, 1935 and is buried in Huntsville, Alabama.

John remarried Dora Weid (b. 1881) on August 27, 1921 in Huntsville, Alabama.
