John was an 8th Generation Appalachian American.
John was born on 11 Mar 1881 in Montgomery County, Kentucky, USA. [1][3]
He was the son of Sylvester Martin and Sallie Welch. [1][2]
He was described as a dark complected white male who was of about 5'7" and weighed around 140 pounds. He had blue eyes and brown hair. [3] [8]
LIFE AND FAMILY
In 1900 John lived in Magisterial District 2, Montgomery County, Kentucky with his parents. He was listed as 20 years old and single. [2]
He married Lula Tubbs before 1910. [2] [3][8]

I listed all the children under them both however there is speculation that Sylvester and Cletus did not belong to Lula.Also William was the son of Lula’s first husband however he was raised by John and used his last name.
